Hedge-Lane

Hedge-Lane is an English Country Dance. It was published by John Playford (website) in 1679 in A Supplement to The Dancing Master, London. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2017 and published in Elephants Stairs. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 18 bars.

Playford writes:
Honour to the Presence, then to your we. Lead up forward and back, that again.
The two first cu. fall back, then the 1. cu. cast off round into the middle while the 2. cu. leads up through the middle and comes to the out-side, than all four being a-breast lead down and back again, then the 2. cu. lead down between the 1. cu. and cast off into their places, then both men cross into the we. places, and the we. into the men's This over again.
First man turn right-hand with the 2. wo. once roud, then 2. man turn left with the 1. wo. once round.
First cu. turn both hands once round, and so down into the 2. cu. place, while the 2. cu. cast up into the 1. cu. place.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), turn single, cast, lead, lead and cast (and probably others).
