Highland Wedding

Highland Wedding is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Johnston in 1752 and published in Two Hundred Favourite Country Dances, Vol. 8. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1988 and published in Retreads Vol.3. Originally proper this version is a 3 Couple Longways dance with the 2s improper. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 312. The minor set lasts 48 bars.

May be found in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library online collection: Johnson Vol. 8, it is on page 36 (the index says "71", but it is dance 71 on page 36).

Johnson writes:

First Cu. foot it and change Places. the same back again. Cross over two Cu. lead to the top and cast off hands 6 round and Right and Left

Originally a proper triple minor dance.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
