Huntington's Maggot

Huntington's Maggot is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1695 in The Dancing Master, 9th ed., London. It was interpreted by Bernard Bentley in 1971 and published in The Fallibroome Collection, Vol. 4. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 64 bars. It is in the key: D minor. Someone thought this dance was Hard.

Playford writes:

The two men take hands, and the two we. at the same time fall back, all four meet and turn Single, the first man turn the second woman by the right hand, and fall into their own places Take hands, fall back, meet and turn S. the 1. wo. turn the 2. man, and fall into their own places The 1. cu. cross over below the 2. cu. take hands and turn round, the other cu. do the same as before The 1. cu. meet and set, and cast off The other cu. do the like Back to back both cu. then right and left with your Partners All four lead up hands abreast, then lead through and cast off Each Strain of the Tune to be played twice.

The tune was published with the dance. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album Strong Roots. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 103 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, cast, lead, rights and lefts, lead and cast, cross go below, back to back (and probably others).
