Lord Howe's Jig ~ Bolton

Lord Howe's Jig ~ Bolton Lord Howe's Jig ~ Apted

Lord Howe's Jig ~ Bolton is an English Country Dance. It was published by Thompson in 1777. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton in 2003. It is a Triple Minor dance with the 2s improper. The dance lasts 32 bars.

Thompson writes:
Hey on your own side · hands six all round : all six foot it and change sides, the same back again · cross over and right and left ··

Bolton has given this dance a triple progression and made the 2s improper.

Edge effects:
1) The 2s in the top minor set need to switch sides when the other 2s do (bars 5+6 of B2)
2a) If the number of couples is divisible by three, then in the bottom set the 1s will need to do three changes of rights and lefts (bars 5+6 of B2)
2b) If there is one couple out at bottom, then they do not need to change sides but the they must one one left hand change with the 1s from the set above on bars 7+8 of B2.
2c) If there are two couples out at bottom, then they must switch places (2s move up, 1s down) and the 2s must do B2 just like all the other 2s, while the 1s do bars 1+2 of B2 to switch sides.
I have these four doing: A1: three changes of circular hey, A2: circle four left + back right, B1: set+change, set+change, B2 1s do the first change, 2s do what they normally do

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance is slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
