Monk's March, with the Wanders is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second. It was interpreted by Bernard Bentley in 1962 and published in The Fallibroome Collection, Vol. 1. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 56 bars.
The first Man Figures round his Partner, then round the 2d Man, which brings him into his Place; the 2d Woman does the same at the same Time Then the first Woman and the 2d Man do the same as the other did Then the first and 2d Man leads thro' the two Women, and cast off and turn, then the first and 2d Women do the same Then first Man go Back to Back with the 2d Woman Then the first Wo. goes Back to Back with the 2d Man Then the first Man clap twice with his Partner, the other Cu. do the same at the same Time Then the two Men, and the two We. clap twice both at the same time, turning eache other, the first Man must observe in turning, to turn himself into the 2d Cu Place, but his Wo. must turn to the Top, there clapping with the contrary Partner Twice, then the two Men clap Twice, then take each his own Partner and turn quite round
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, figure eight, back to back (and probably others).
If you find what you believe to be a mistake in this animation, please leave a comment on youtube explaining what you believe to be wrong. If I agree with you I shall do my best to fix it.
