Mr. Heath's Dance

Mr. Heath's Dance is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1997 and published in Retreads Vol.7. Originally proper this version is a 4 Couple Longways dance with the 3s, 4s improper. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 3142. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Playford writes:

Note: The first Strain twice over, and the last but once.

The first Couple cast off and turn the third Couple, then Sett and cast up to your own places This to the first Strain play'd twice Then the first Couple cast off, and take Hands with the second Couple and go quite round, then go the whole Figure with the third Couple and turn you Partner in the second Couples place This to the last Strain play'd once

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
