Spring Garden ~ Pat Shaw

Spring Garden ~ Pat Shaw Spring Garden ~ Sharp

Spring Garden ~ Pat Shaw is an English Country Dance. It was published by John Playford (website) in 1657 in The Dancing Master, 3rd ed.. It was interpreted by Pat Shaw (website) in 1967 and published in Another Look at Playford. Originally proper this version is a 4 Couple Longways dance with the 1s, 3s improper. There is no progression in this dance. The dance lasts 120 bars.

Playford writes:

Lead up forwards and back That again Four to one end and four to the other, hands half round and fall back from one another and change places, men in the middle and the ends with their own This again Then all again.

Men change back to back, and we. the like, change each with his own That again Cast off at both ends, the 2. follow the 2. and the 3. and 4. set to them you meet, and change places with them First and 2. lead down, othe other up, and change places All this again.

Lead to the wall forward and back Turn off, and change each with his own First and last cu. meet, and the 2. and 3. fall back, the men arm in the middle, and the ends with their own This again Then all again.

Shaw has made 4 changes from Sharp's interpretation. I think some of these changes improve the dance, but that some don't. I should advise callers to pick and choose:

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color.

The dance contains the following figures: set, circle, cast, lead, cast and lead, arming (and probably others).

If you find what you believe to be a mistake in this animation, please leave a comment on youtube explaining what you believe to be wrong. If I agree with you I shall do my best to fix it.
