The Mock Match - Maggot Pie

The Mock Match - Maggot Pie is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Marjorie Heffer & William Porter in 1932 and published in Maggot Pie. It is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 312. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

This dance calls for a set followed by a balance. I'm not sure what "balance" would mean in the 1930s in this context. They do not do the Contra Dance two person balance of joining both hands, approaching and falling back, because they seem to retain the same orientation and hand clasp in the subsequent figure. Faut de mieux I have put in another set.

The instructions in Maggot Pie for bars 5-8 of A1/A2 have the two pairs turning in opposite directions. I believe this to be incorrect. Symmetry suggests they should turn in the same direction.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: set, circle, cast, lead (and probably others).
