The Old Maid in Hopes

Vallentinia

The Old Maid in Hopes or Vallentinia is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Nathaniel Kynaston in 1718 and published in Twenty Four New Country Dances for the Year 1718, London. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2006 and published in Emperor of the Moon. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Kynaston writes:

Note: Each strain twice.

The 1st. cu. cast off, the 1st. man take his partner, first by the right, then left hand, lead her down the middle to below the 3rd. cu. and turn single then cast up above the 3rd. cu. cross up to the top the 1st. and 2d. cu. meet, turn back to back, clap hands twice, take hands backward and go quite round the 1st. cu. slip down the middle, then the 1st. and 2d. cu. take first right, then left hands across with their partners and turn quite round

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), turn single, turn single cloverleaf, circle, cast, lead (and probably others).
