The Other Phoenix

The Phoenix #2

The Other Phoenix or The Phoenix #2 is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1718 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, 3rd ed., London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1986 and published in Retreads Vol.2. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 40 bars.

Playford published two dances named The Phoenix, the first was first published in 1670 (in editions 4-10 of the Dancing Master), the second first appeared in 1718 in the third edition of the second volume of the Dancing Master. This is an interpretation of the second dance (for the first see Sharp's work.

Playford writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over
The first Cu. lead up and the 2d down at the same Time, and Back to Back, then all four Hands round Then the 2nd Cu. cast off The first Cu. cast off The first Cu. go the whole Figure, cast off and turn Hands Then all four Back to Back and turn Hands

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
