The Parting Lovers

The Parting Lovers The Parting Lovers ~ Triple

The Parting Lovers is an English Country Dance. It was published by Thompson in 1776 in Twenty four Country Dances for the year 1776. It was interpreted by W. S. Porter, M. Heffer, A. Heffer in 1931 and published in The Apted Book of Country Dances. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 48 bars.

Thompson writes:
The 1st. & 2d. Cu. set & half right & left the same back again cast off one Cu. set and not turn cast off the next Cu. set and not turn and lead up to the top cross over hands four at bottom right and left at top

Note the interpretation in the book calls for a "circular hey" (to me this means without hands), but Thompson says "right & left" (to me this means with hands).

Originally a triple minor.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: set, turn single, circle, cast, lead, rights and lefts (and probably others).
