Set and Turn Single

A dancer first sets for two bars, and then turns single (usually to the right) for two more bars.

History

This was a common idiom in Playford's day (though I do not find it in the Lovelace MS who said "sett twice" instead). Almost every dance in the first two editions of the dancing master contained it, but none in the 5th, 6th, or 7th. The Neals were still using it in Ireland in 1726 (though they called it "dance and turn single")
