Turn of the Tide

Turn of the Tide is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Ron Coxall in 1999 and published in CDSS News #169. It is an indecent duple minor longways dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: G major.

The choreographer suggests that the 1s be proper and the 2s improper (an "indecent" dance). But most people seem to dance it with the 1s improper and the 2s proper as people are more used to that configuration. It doesn't matter, either works. I follow the author's suggestion here.

The tune, Moonlight Moorings was composed by Heather Bexon in 1998. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album A New English Ball. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 117 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), circle, cast, lead, poussette (and probably others).
