Twelfe Eve or Twelfth Eve is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1702 in Twenty Four New Country Dances. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2024 and published in The Irish Howle. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 312. The minor set lasts 32 bars.
Published as "Twelfe Eve" in 1702, subsequent editions called it "Twelfth Eve". The last night of Christmas in the liturgical calendar.
John Young writes:
The first Man cast off below 2. Man, and goes within-side the third Man and stand below him, his Partner does the same after him Then cast up itno the 2. cu. Place, and sett to your Partner; then cast up into your own Place The 1. Man turns the 2 Wo. and the 2. Man turns the 1. Wo Then cross over below the 2. cu. and go the Figure
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, cast, lead, figure eight, hey, cross go below (and probably others).
