Intersecting Reels

In an intersecting reel you have two reels of four which meet at right angles to one another. Outer dancers face in, inner face out. You pass the person you are facing by the right, the dancers in the center do a left hands across half (twice as fast as usual, you've only got one bar), and then pass the next person right.

Variants

It should be possible to modify this figure to work from parallel reels of four. Dutch Crossing (1990) has an interesting variant from a 16 person square (4 lines of four dancers) with right hands across half for the four small squares at the corners of the big square, the left hands across half for the center square of four, and so forth

History

I found two dances using this figure in 1964, and none before that. One is a John Drewry dance called Bonnie Lass of Bon Accord, and the other by Hugh Thurston called Strathtummel.
