Inspired by Keith Rose's Crib Diagrams, for Playford style dances I have added a few extra symbols.
Parthenia - Maggot Pie is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Marjorie Heffer & William Porter in 1932 and published in Maggot Pie. It is a proper 4 Couple Longways dance. It is a USA dance. The dance lasts 96 bars. It is in the key: G minor.
Maggot Pie contains the instruction Partners side. in II.A1 and II.A2. It does not say "side right" or "side left". Both instructions are the same, so I assume they were intended to mean Cecil Sharp style siding, which only came one way. Modern dancers seem to do "right shoulder siding" in II.A1 and "left shoulder siding" in II.A2 but I'm pretty sure that's not what Marjorie Heffer had in mind. In III.A1 and III.A2 she does say Partners arm with the right or left rather than just "Partners arm", indicating to me she intended both "side"s to be the same.
Normally I approve of changing Sharp style siding to shoulder siding, because even Sharp himself said that his siding was a mistake, and Playford used shoulder siding. But this is a special case. The dances in Maggot Pie were written with Sharp style siding.
The CD notes provided by Bare Necessities imply that the tune may have originated in a book of the same name published about 1611. But Colin Hume can't find this tune in it.
The book, Maggot Pie, implies that some of the tunes are new (which I think means "composed by William Porter for the dance).
Wherever it came from, the tune was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album Mrs. Beveridge's Triumph. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.
The animation plays at 113 counts per minute. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color.
The dance contains the following figures: USA, set, gypsy, circle, lead, hey, rights and lefts, arming, change, swirly siding, double / single
