The Saucy Sailor

The Saucy Sailor is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Marjorie Heffer & William Porter in 1932 and published in Maggot Pie. It is a Facing Couples Becket dance. There is no progression in this dance. It is a multipart dance. The dance lasts 96 bars.

Maggot Pie calls for a cast counter-clockwise in III.B1 but this doesn't flow nicely into the subsequent clockwise circle. We could change the circle to counter-clockwise, but that doesn't flow into a clockwise gypsy (the gypsy must be clockwise, a counter-clockwise three quarter gypsy goes to neighbor rather than partner). So I have turned the cast into a cast right. I suspect this is yet another misprint in Maggot Pie.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, gypsy, circle, cast, mad robin, back to back (and probably others).
