Up With Aily

Up With Aily is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1703 in The Dancing Master, 12th ed., London. It was interpreted by Cecil Sharp (website) in 1922 and published in The Country Dance Book (Part 6). It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 20 bars. It is in the key: A minor.

Playford writes:
First man takes his own partner with his left-hand, and the man of the 2. cu. with his right-hand, so leads to the 2. wo. and falls back again, so cast off into the 2. man's place, the 2. man turning up at the same time into his, and the two we. at the same time turning round single in their proper places, the 1. wo. takes the 2. man with her right-hand and the 2. wo. with her left, so leads to her Partner being in the 2. man's place, and falls back again, then casts off into the 2. wo's place, the 2. wo. at the same time turning up into hers, and the two men turning round single The 1. cu. being in the 2d's place, go back to back, then cast up into their proper places, the 2d. cu. at the same time turning down into theirs All 4 take hands and go clear round, then each cu. being in their proper places, first cu. cast off into the 2d's place

Cecil Sharp replaced the original slip-jig with another tune, called The Hare's Maggot, from a later edition of Playford. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album More Favorites of the Boston Centre. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 106 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
