Up Tayles All

Up Tails All ~ Bolton Up Tails All ~ Sharp #1 Up Tails All ~ Sharp #2 Up Tails All

Up Tails All ~ Bolton or Up Tayles All is an English Country Dance. It was published by John Playford (website) in 1651 in The English Dancing Master, London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1985 and published in Retreads Vol.1. It is a Square dance. There is no progression in this dance. It is a multipart dance. The dance lasts 104 bars. It is in the key: G Major.

Playford writes:

Lead in all a D. and back againe, set and turne S. That againe
First Cu. lead through the 2. Cu cast off and meet within, clap hands and Armes And so forward to the next, the rest following in order
First Cu lead through the 2. cast off and meet within, clap hands all foure, hands acrosse all foure, and round to your places, and so forward &c.
First Cu. lead through the 2. Cu. cast off and meet within, chap hands all foure, and hand round all foure to your places and so forward &c

Playford describes this as a "round for as many as will". Bolton has turned it into a dance for four couples. Playford has four figures, each one done by all the couples before the next figure is started. Bolton has each couple doing its own figure.

Playford (and Sharp) number couples clockwise, so to them the second couple would be the one on the left. Bolton follows the modern square dance tradition where the second couple is the one on the right.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color.
